At Hoaglandscape, we believe that every outdoor space has the potential to become an oasis. Recently, we had the privilege of transforming a tired, leaky pond into an expansive and breathtaking pondless waterfall for homeowners in Huntersville, North Carolina—about thirty minutes from our headquarters. This ambitious project combined large-scale boulders, creative engineering, and thoughtful landscaping to create a truly show-stopping water feature.
From Leaky Pond to Pondless Waterfall
Our clients initially had a small pond that was constantly leaking and becoming overgrown. Rather than trying to repair or patch it yet again, they decided on a complete transformation: a pondless waterfall that would provide the soothing sights and sounds of moving water without the maintenance of a traditional pond. By placing the waterfall closer to the patio, they could enjoy its beauty—and the tranquil sound of cascading water—from their primary outdoor seating area.
Key Steps in the Transformation
- Removing the Old Pond: We started by draining and dismantling the existing pond. This gave us a clean slate to create a wide, multi-drop waterfall feature.
- Clearing Out Overgrowth: Overgrown junipers and other plant material were removed to open up the space for a broader, more dramatic water design.
- Prepping the Site: To protect the homeowners’ lawn, we laid down plywood planks for our equipment and deliveries, preserving as much of the existing turf as possible.
Hand-Selected Boulders for a Dramatic Statement
The key to any eye-catching water feature is the quality of stone. We visited Markham Landscape Products to select the perfect boulders—some weighing up to two tons! Our goal was to find pieces that not only fit into the overall scale of the yard, but also had natural character:
- Colorful, Moss-Covered Rock: We prioritized boulders with vibrant coloring and beautiful patches of moss for a natural, time-worn appearance.
- Multiple Shapes & Sizes: While larger boulders create the “wow” factor, we also included medium and smaller stones for visual balance and a more organic look.
- Textured Surfaces: One boulder in particular had fascinating cracks and ridges that would allow water to flow in unique ways—perfect for the central waterfall drop.
Constructing the Waterfall Basin
Once the boulders arrived, our team got to work building the under-structure that would bring this waterfall to life.
- Installing the Reservoir: We used sturdy AquaBlox to form the reservoir where water can be stored. Two pump vaults were set up to accommodate powerful pumps—making sure there was plenty of circulation for a wide, multi-drop design.
- Shaping & Berming: Using topsoil, we built a berm behind the basin to support the waterfall’s height and create a series of drops. This approach gave us more elevation and allowed for a more dramatic water flow.
Layering the Waterfall Drops
With the foundation in place, it was time to set the boulders for each drop:
- Lower Falls: A series of smaller stones and accent rocks guide water gracefully from the top into the basin.
- Mid-Level Falls: Larger boulders create visually striking cascades, while bib liners ensure water does not seep behind the rocks.
- Top Falls: At the highest point, we used a massive two-and-a-half-ton framing boulder to deliver a bold initial drop. It’s designed to splash and churn the water for a dramatic effect that can be enjoyed from the patio and nearby deck.
Overcoming Winter Surprises
Midway through the project, we encountered a rare dusting of snow—a novelty in the Carolinas, where even light snow can shut down a city. Despite the cold and slippery conditions, our team pressed on to keep the project on schedule. The payoff was a stunning waterfall accentuated by a wintry backdrop.
Landscaping & Lighting for the Perfect Finishing Touch
No outdoor water feature is complete without cohesive landscaping and the right lighting. Once the waterfall was up and flowing, we introduced layers of plants and stonework to unify the area:
- Evergreen Foliage: We planted ornamental hollies, junipers, and luster-leaf ligustrums for year-round color and structure.
- Accent Trees: A coral bark Japanese maple adds a striking pop of color, especially against the warm tones of our boulders.
- Low-Voltage Lighting: Strategically placed path and spotlights highlight key plants, illuminate walkways, and showcase the waterfall at night.
Front Yard Refresh
The homeowners were so pleased with their backyard makeover that they asked us to improve their front foundation beds, too. We installed new shrubs, added focal boulders, and set path lights to softly guide guests from the driveway to the front door. An existing Japanese maple now has both front and back lighting, revealing its beauty from every angle.
The End Result
This pondless waterfall project demonstrates the transformative power of creative design, quality materials, and expert workmanship. By replacing a leaking, overgrown pond with a broad, cascading water feature, we delivered a dramatic focal point that the homeowners can enjoy from multiple vantage points all year round. With the addition of vibrant landscaping and night-lighting, this Huntersville property truly shines—day or night.
