Designed with multiple interactive zones, swimming access, waterfalls, and viewing decks, this project brings together relaxation, natural beauty, and family fun in one incredible backyard.

Client Goals & Features

The homeowners wanted a backyard space where their grandchildren could swim with koi, explore nature, and enjoy the soothing ambiance of a pond. The design includes:

  • A natural swimming pond with enough depth and clarity for safe swimming
  • Multiple waterfalls that create a calming soundscape
  • Interactive stepping stones and moss-covered boulders for tactile, hands-on play
  • A Japanese-style tea house and deck system overlooking the pond

Design & Construction Details

  • Pond Dimensions: Custom-shaped with varied depths, supporting both koi and swimmers
  • Stonework: Mix of Tennessee fieldstone and weathered limestone boulders, carefully positioned for both aesthetics and function
  • Filtration: A wetland filtration system powered by a 3,000 GPH pump with 16 AquaBlox for water storage and biological filtration
  • Intake Bay & Circulation: Jets direct debris to an intake bay, ensuring clean and clear water
  • Decks & Viewing Areas: Four completed decks (with a fifth in progress), including:
  • A deck integrated with a Japanese maple growing through the boards
  • An upper grilling and dining deck with expansive views
  • A cedar Japanese tea house featuring custom rice-glass panels and sliding doors

 

Landscaping & Wildlife Elements

  • Water Plants: Water lilies, elephant ears, and aquatic mosses
  • Wildlife Consideration: The pond offers safe hiding areas for koi beneath decks and boulders to protect from predators
  • Unique Features: A historic grinding stone repurposed as a table adds charm and family heritage to the setting
