Project Profile: Waterfall + Koi Pond Revival in Belmont, N.C

Location: Belmont, N.C.
Completion Date: December
Client: Local Resident & Friend of Brian

Project Overview

This pond renovation in Belmont, N.C. transformed a small 6’ x 5’ koi pond with a 4-foot stream into a beautifully upgraded 12’ x 6’ pond with an 8-foot stream and three waterfalls. The project focused on improving both aesthetics and functionality, using all Aquascape products and natural boulder features to create a tranquil, long-lasting outdoor retreat.

Challenges & Solutions

  • No Underlayment on Old Pond: The existing pond liner had no underlayment, making it vulnerable to punctures and gas buildup. We corrected this by installing proper underlayment before placing a new liner.
  • Outdated Skimmer: We replaced an inefficient skimmer with a modern Aquascape skimmer, paired with an AquaSurge 4000 pump.
  • Drainage & Overflow: We added a gravel-filled overflow pit and installed a corrugated pipe connection to the existing downspout to manage stormwater and prevent pond flooding.
  • Excess Soil Management: The excavation produced a large amount of dirt, which we used to build planting mounds and construct two boulder retaining walls—one to protect the heating and air unit and another to shield the adjacent artificial putting green.

Pond Features & Boulder Work

  • Integrated natural mossy boulders from Markham Landscape Products to replace small decorative stones.
  • Installed a large, comfortable sitting boulder beside the pond – perfect for feeding fish and enjoying the waterfalls up close.
  • Built a three-tier waterfall stream for additional movement and sound.

Lighting & Finishing Touches

  • Installed a 3-watt LED light to highlight the main waterfall.
  • Added 1-watt lights to illuminate the two smaller waterfalls for nighttime ambiance.
  • Completed the project with mulch and plants, with additional landscaping to follow.

Client Impact & Final Results

The project was completed just in time for the homeowners’ Christmas party, giving them not only a revitalized water feature but also a clean and inviting walkway for guests. The client was thrilled with the outcome, and the koi are thriving in their new, clearer, and safer environment.

A month later, even during winter, the pond continues to perform beautifully—with crystal clear water, smooth flow, and a peaceful atmosphere that promises to be a favorite hangout in warmer weather.
