Hoaglandscape is Charlotte’s Landscape and Pond Specialist
Headquartered in Belmont, N.C., Hoaglandscape primarily serves the areas surrounding Charlotte, including Mecklenburg, Gaston and York (S.C.) counties with complete residential landscape, water garden and outdoor lighting services.
Formed by owner and president Brian Hoagland in 2002, Hoaglandscape is a seven-time superior service award winner, designated by the nation’s leading contractor reviewer. We also enjoy an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau.
Hoagland is a classic hard rock and heavy metal music fan. So much so, he came up with the moniker, “Hoaglandscape rocks!” It fits because Hoaglandscape is known for utilizing big specimen boulders in landscapes as well as its water features.
Hoagland began his operation as a one-man show. He purchased a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck to help with his work. He still drives the vehicle today and it has more than 350,000 miles on it.
While the miles and years have passed by, Hoaglandscape has created a shining reputation for its natural landscapes and water features.
“You look at so many homes that are out there and many have the same, outdated landscape design,” Hoagland says. “That’s often tall, high-maintenance hollies on the corners of a house and ‘green meatballs,’ shrubs that have to continually be pruned into sphere shapes. You see nothing but green landscapes devoid of other colors. We prefer more modern rules of landscaping, including groups of various plantings with different textures, form and color. We prefer native plantings that perform well in our climate zone and plants that are low-maintenance.”
Hoaglandscape won “Best Design” and “Best Use of Color” at the 2008 Southern Spring Show in a project done in conjunction with Pike Nursery. In 2012, he won an Aquascape, Inc., national “Trop Frog” award for its work in the water garden industry. Hoaglandscape’s work was also featured in two national magazine publications.
Hoagland was born in 1963 in Hartford, Conn. In 1985, he graduated with a Communications degree from Appalachian State University. He worked as a sportswriter at The Spartanburg Herald-Journal where he won a N.Y. Times Chairman’s Award for his writing with the South Carolina-based newspaper. He later covered Charlotte Hornets basketball games for the Associated Press as a freelance writer in the early 1990s.
In 1991, he entered a decade-long career in public relations, serving as Pontiac’s NASCAR spokesperson for nine years and eventually forming his own PR firm, Hoagland Communications. He worked alongside such championship drivers as Richard Petty, Tony Stewart, Rusty Wallace and Bobby Labonte. He left the NASCAR circuit in 2000.
Hoagland’s parents were life-long landscaping enthusiasts and he decided to enter that field.
An avid sports enthusiast, Hoagland regularly attends Appalachian State football games. In 2008, he served as president of the school’s Yosef Club Advisory Board, spearheading the school’s student-athlete scholarship fundraising organization. That year, the board raised a then-record $2.3 million. Hoagland is an historian of World War II’s Eastern Front and Holocaust.
Brian and his wife, Christie, were married in May of 1995. She is instrumental in the planning and development of Hoaglandscape, including creating the company’s name. Christie is a senior vice president with Bank of America in Charlotte. The couple loves to travel around the world. They have no children but love to spoil their hound dogs “Fiddle” and “Ralphie,” both rescues.
